The Man Whose Mind Saw Into Ours

A hundred years ago, Carl Gustav Jung explored for the first time the depths of the human psyche. We are now reaping the benefits as we seek to become conscious of the inner working of our own minds. This September, a unique and impressive exhibition of his life and work will be on display at the C.G. Jung Foundation for Analytical Psychology in midtown Manhattan.

The exhibit has not been seen in New York for more than a quarter of a century. In 1975, on the centennial of his birth, Jung’s colleagues and the Pro Helvetia Foundation assembled a touring exhibition to celebrate his achievements. At the time, the Smithsonian Institution promoted it in the United States.

This intimate portrait shows us the arc of Jung’s life and pioneering breakthroughs. As a boy growing up in simple country surroundings, Jung had direct experiences of his unconscious mind. During his psychiatric training at the Burghölzli mental asylum, he witnessed extreme examples of how unconscious energies can overwhelm the ego with devastating consequences.

Jung found a kindred spirit in Sigmund Freud, who immediately recognized his genius. Freud called Jung his “crown prince,” the successor who would spread Freud’s word. But Jung’s psyche forced him to separate from this powerful father figure and follow his own vision. It cost him his friendship with Freud, but ultimately led to one psychological breakthrough after another.

Jung pioneered the discovery of different layers of the unconscious, including the collective unconscious; the principles of introversion and extroversion; the different personality types which determine how each of us perceives the world — through thinking, feeling, sensation, or intuition — and the universal concepts of archetypes, synchronicity, and compensation, to name a few.

C.G. Jung at the C.G. Jung Foundation shows the development of Jung's ideas through photographs, his writing and his art, as well as through the influence of the patients who inspired him. It reveals an intimate window into this unique explorer of the human psyche, as well as into the human condition we all share.

C.G. Jung opens with a reception at the C.G. Jung Foundation at 28 East 39th Street on Tuesday, September 15th at 6:00 p.m. The exhibition runs through Thursday, September 24th.
