Item #1

Toni Wolff's Travel Alarm Clock

Value: $250, Minimum Bid: $100

Toni Anna Wolff (1888-1953) was a Swiss analyst and a close confidant of C.G. Jung. In her, Jung found a psychological mate, whom he referred to as his “second wife.” She was Jung’s professional assistant and eventually his colleague, sharing in his analytic practice. She traveled with Jung on many of his academic tours and is the author of papers including "Structural Forms of the Feminine Psyche." She owned and used the clock for many years.

The clock is a travel alarm that folds flat, manufactured by E. Gobelin. It is in a genuine alligator case and, when folded, approximately 2 1/2 inches in width and 3 3/4 inches long. It is a wind-up clock with a second hand and is much heavier than one we would use today.

The clock was presented as a gift to Deirdre Bair, Jung’s biographer, by Dr. Med. Georg Trub, Ms. Wolff's nephew and the son of her younger sister, Susanna Christine Wolff-Trub and her husband, Hans Trub, on behalf of the Wolff family.

Framed photograph by Evelyn Hofer

Value: $1,500, Minimum Bid: $350

Item #3

Evian les Bains – France, 1980, Artist's Proof

Framed photograph by Evelyn Hofer

Value: $1,500, Minimum Bid: $350

“Stillness, equilibrium and monumentality have always been the mark of Evelyn Hofer's work with the camera — so much so, in fact, that we feel that if she were ever to photograph the sea the very waves would hold their breath for her. Given that she also has an educated eye, as well as an instinctive one, and that her work has always been remarkable for an exceptional clarity and serenity of registration, we have to see her as one of the most distinguished photographers around.” – John Russell, New York Times, January 17, 1986 from “Modern Masters at Janis Gallery"

Evelyn Hofer, born in Marburg an der Lahn, Germany, grew up in Switzerland and Spain. She apprenticed with the Studio Bettina in Zurich and then worked in Basel with Robert Spreng. She started her career as a freelance photographer in Mexico, and in 1947 she moved to New York and worked with Alexey Brodovitch for Harper's Bazaar and later for Vogue. She took the photographs for Mary McCarthy‘s The Stones of Florence and also worked with various other notable writers. Her photographs are included in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Houston Museum of Fine Art, and David Rockefeller, Jr.

Chimeras

Painting by Clarence Holbrook Carter American painter (1904–2000)

Value: $2,000, Minimum Bid: $400

American master artist, Clarence Holbrook Carter was a prolific painter and printmaker. Trained at the Cleveland Institute of Arts, he traveled extensively through Europe, studied at Hans Hoffman Summer School in Capri and had exhibited in Carnegie International and other international watercolor exhibitions, in the early stages of his career.

Through the next four decades, Carter's works was labeled, surrealism, Magic Realism, geometric abstraction, pop and op, but no category could capture his style completely. It was in the mid-1960's, in his series called "Mandalas," that his fascination with the egg-shaped ovoid began. Author James A. Michener has commented that the egg in Carter's works is "… a mysterious symbol evoking the past, the origins, the overtones of Christianity."

In Carter's own words: "for me no great art has ever existed without some mystery and some awe. It is that intangible which can never be defined but only felt in an elusive way that stirs the spirit."

Item #7

Mural by Wesley Usher to be created for a healing organization of your choice

Value: $2,000, Minimum Bid: $500

Wesley Usher is a visual artist and writer who lives in New York City. She attended graduate school in applied psychology at New York University. During her last year at NYU, she studied independently with noted gender and trauma specialist, Dr. Judith Alpert. The result of that independent study has been an on-going interest in the connection between gender bias, mythology and the development of Self.

Ms. Usher has focused on applying her NYU research to her writing and art. She recently completed a series of healing-based murals for Mount Sinai Hospital and will create a mural or painting for a healing organization of the donor’s choice, with the permission of that organization.

“Ms. Usher . . . recently coupled her compassion with her talents as an artist to complete a renovation of the exam room used in The Mount Sinai Hospital’s Emergency Department used specifically for treating survivors of sexual assault. This space has now been transformed into a sanctuary filled with bamboo, moonlight and tree frogs far removed from the sterile atmosphere of a typical exam room. Research indicates that the physical environment in which medical attention is given can have a significant effect on that person’s overall hospital experience, as well as their recovery. In particular, scenes depicting nature and natural settings are considered to be most beneficial.” — Julia Turkel, SAFE Program Coordinator, Mount Sinai Medical Center
