The C.G. Jung Foundation for Analytical Psychology

A Jungian Encounter with the Soul of India

January 4 – 18, 2008

Sponsored by
The C.G. Jung Foundation of New York

Guest Lecturer: Ashok Bedi, M.D., Jungian Psychoanalyst

The C.G. Jung Foundation of New York is proud to sponsor a third educational tour of India in January 2008. This trip is an opportunity to see India through the lens of analytical psychology, tracing the steps of C. G. Jung on his journey in the 1930’s. It will allow tour members to perceive the archetypal depths of life and psyche that Indians knew and expressed in their myth and art, and to understand how the experience and expression of these archetypal dimensions greatly influenced culture and civilization. We are honored to have once again as our guest lecturer Dr. Ashok Bedi.

Ashok Bedi, M.D., is a psychiatrist and Jungian analyst. Educated and trained in India, Great Britain, and the United States, he is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists of Great Britain; Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association; clinical professor of psychiatry at the Medical College of Wisconsin; and a senior member of the Milwaukee Psychiatric Physicians and a faculty member at the Analyst Training Program at the Carl G. Jung Institute of Chicago. He is presently helping several psychiatric groups in India establish the "India Jung Center" in affiliation with the International Association for Analytical Psychology.

Trained in Medicine, Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis in India, Great Britain and the United States, he is interested in the emerging frontiers of Spirituality and Healing and the synapses of the Mind, Body, Soul and Spirit. He is author of the book, Path to the Soul, (Weiser Books, 2000), and the coauthor of Retire Your Family Karma, (Nicholas-Hays, Inc. 2003). These and his other upcoming publications can be previewed at his website www.pathtothesoul.com

The focus of this educational tour will be a further exploration of the role of myth in psychology as a living experience, and the mythology, psychology, art and architecture of India. Throughout the trip there will be group meetings with Dr. Bedi and scheduled times to discuss and assimilate these experiences. The itinerary is rich and varied, and includes a three-day Jungian retreat at the beautiful Ananda Spa, nestled in the Himalayas in Rishikesh at the close of the journey.

This trip is being coordinated through Mindful Journeys, Inc. Contact information for Mindful Journeys is listed following the itinerary. If you wish to visit the Mindful Journeys website, it is: www.mindfuljourneys.com. Please note that the size of the group will be limited. New Delhi

After a leisurely breakfast we will visit Mahatma Gandhi’s Memorial and Old Delhi with the Jama Mashid or Friday Mosque. From there enjoy a rickshaw ride through the narrow lanes of the old city.

Delhi is the symbol of old and new India. The country’s capital represents a perfect blend of tradition and modernity. Delhi offers vast cultural distinctiveness within its boundary. The hub of the metropolis is Central New Delhi, which presents a picture of the orderly, planned city capital established by the British. Old Delhi however is quintessentially Indian, with a warren of cluttered houses, traditional lifestyles and age-old monuments. The city is lush with a plethora of temples, forts, mosques as well as parks, gardens and beautiful colonial mansions. The strategic location of the city was one of the prime reasons why successive dynasties chose it as their seat of power.

After lunch we continue our visit in New Delhi with sightseeing of the 16th century tomb of the second Mughal emperor Humayun designed by the Persian architect Mirak Mizra Ghiyas and the Qutab Minar. Return to the hotel for dinner.

Varanasi

Pilgrims from all over India come to this city of redemption to wash away their sins or to immerse the ashes of their ancestors in the sacred Ganges. We watch these ancient rituals on our dawn boat ride as the sun rises over the Ganges.

Continue with sightseeing of the Vishwanath Temple at Benares Hindu University.

Breakfast at the hotel, followed by lecture and discussion with Dr. Bedi.

Afternoon at leisure.

Towards sunset we revisit the Ghats to witness evening Ritual, Aarti Ceremony.

Varanasi, known to the devout as Kashi, is said to have been founded by Shiva, Lord of the Universe. One of the oldest living cities in the world, as also one of the most important pilgrimage sites in India, Varanasi is a major tourist attraction. Situated on the banks of the sacred Ganges, the city has been a center of learning and civilization for over 2000 years.

Agra

Agra is globally renown as the city of the Taj Mahal, but this royal Mughal City has, in addition to the legendary Taj, many monuments that epitomize the high point of Mughal architecture. In the Mughal period, in the 16th and 17th centuries, Agra was the capital of India. It was here that the founder of the dynasty, Babar, laid out the first formal Persian garden on the banks of the river Yamuna. Here, Akbar, his grandson raised the towering ramparts of the great Red Fort. Within its walls, Jehangir built rose-red palaces, courts and gardens, and Shahajahan embellished it with marble mosques, palaces and pavilions of gem-inlaid white marble.

January 13, 2008
Agra — Delhi — Rishikesh

After breakfast drive to Delhi where we board the afternoon train for Haridwar. From there we transfer to the Ananda in the Himalayas. Swirled in the sacred mists of time, Ananda is nestled in the Himalayas, and a preferred destination for the discerning traveler. Once the residence of Maharaja of Tehri-Garhwal, it is dedicated to today’s traveler, who is looking for innovative ways to restore and rejuvenate his/her energy.

Rishikesh represents the Gateway to the Himalayas in the Tehri-Garhwal region of Uttar Pradesh and abounds in natural splendor. The spectacle of the Ganges rushing through the Himalayan foothills is an awesome sight. Several temples dot the banks of the Ganges at Rishikesh.
