Summer Study Programs
July 11 – 16, 2004 Betrayal, Revenge, and Forgiveness
Sunday, July 11, 2004
6:30 – 8:00 pm Monday, July 12, 2004 Using the Garden of Eden story, we will explore the differing contributions to self-esteem provided by the patriarchal Garden of Eden and, in contrast, the nurturing Paradise of Mother Earth. We will also look at narcissistic survival strategies to determine their contribution to our capacity to tolerate the intolerable, characteristic in self-betrayal. What may trap us in a self-betraying situation will also be explored. Instructor: Irene Gad, MD, PhD
Tuesday, July 13, 2004 From Eden to Hell, from womb to tomb, as a misanthrope might say, it is all deception upon treachery. And a mythologist would agree-myths are betrayal stories, often manifested in our relationships. In the spirit of depth psychology, we will explore vicissitudes of deceit, trickery, fraudulence, sedition and related abominations and their value for psyche and consciousness. Instructor: Sylvester Wojtkowski, PhD Wednesday, July 14, 2004 Revenge is often the first fantasized response to betrayal. The sweetness of revenge, and its bitterness, will be explored through story, art, dreams, and life experience. Instructor: Julie Bondanza, PhD
Thursday, July 15, 2004 What does it mean to forgive and to be forgiven? How does this experience transform our inner lives, our relationship with shame and guilt, and our perception of others in our lives and of society as a whole? This will be a vital exploration of the archetypal experience of forgiving, being forgiven, and withholding forgiveness. Video, literary, and clinical examples will contextualize our discussion. Instructor: Harry W. Fogarty, PhD
Friday July 16, 2004 Suffering and loss often stimulate a sense that one has been betrayed by God. We will explore how Paul the Apostle and Jung both wrestled with forgiving God, paying particular attention to ways that therapy and religious ritual offer means to incorporate reconciliation with the divine in the individuation process. Instructor: William W. Rich, PhD Farewell Dinner and Closing Comments
July 18 – 23, 2004 Body and Soul
Sunday, July 18, 2004
6:30 – 8:00 pm Monday, July 19, 2004 The body expresses the needs of the psyche and offers a path to transformation. Early primal experiences are manifest both psychologically and physiologically throughout one's life journey. This seminar explores the role of dreams, visions and artwork that bring meaning to the archetypal dimension of encounters with physical symptoms and examines the body's integral role in the expression of personal myth. Instructor: Rose-Emily Rothenberg, MA, MFT
Tuesday, July 20, 2004 This seminar will focus on the mystery of love, the making and wounding of what we call the human soul, and the ego's use of power in self-protection and self-surrender. We will look at marriage and other intimate relationships as the alchemical vessel for self-transformation and the play of the gods. Instructor: William Ventimiglia, DMin
Wednesday, July 21, 2004 This seminar will explore the role of the physical body in embodying and expressing the nature and intent of the individual soul. We will examine how this operates in contemporary analytic work. In addition to discussing the dynamics that obstruct and facilitate the union of soul and body, we will examine the role contemporary culture plays in this task, using archetypal material as a background for discerning necessary direction and technique. Instructor: Mark Seides, PhD
Thursday, July 22, 2004 Through imagery, tales, dreams and historical autobiography, we will explore the role of sexuality in psycho-spiritual development. Viewing Eros as the most powerful determinant of personal destiny, we will reflect upon erotic longing as a potency that promotes biological life, calls us to healing, and awakens divine imagery in the soul. Instructor: Melanie Starr Costello, PhD
Friday, July 23, 2004 Yoga means “to Yoke” or connect with the divine. Kundalini Yoga is an ancient wisdom template that provides a path to individuation. It is an embodiment of the archetype of Coniunctio - that unites the opposites in our nature at a gradually increasing level of developmental complexity. Our masculine and feminine potentials, the Shiva and Shakti aspects of our personality do their dance together from the first root charka gradually up through to the seventh crown charka. As we harmonize these opposites at the seven synapses of the body, psyche, soul and the Spirit, our personal consciousness transcends to yoke with the universal consciousness. Our authentic nature is now aligned with our purpose in this world and its place in the program of the Universe - the Unus Mundus. The basic tenants of the Kundalini Yoga will be presented and amplified by clinical examples and movie clips. Instructor: Ashok Bedi, MD
