Communication from the Unconscious:
An Introduction to Spontaneous Drawing Interpretation
Saturday, April 26, 2025
10:00 am - 3:00 pm EST
a Zoom seminar led by
Jane Selinske EdD, LCSW, NCPsyA-LP, MT-BC
Contact hours: 4 CE contact hours for Licensed NYS Social Workers, Psychoanalysts and Creative Arts Therapists for this program.
“The Wealth of the Soul Exists in Images” C.G. Jung, The Red Book, Liber Novus
Jolande Jacobi was the first one to begin to develop a method of picture interpretation from a Jungian lens. This workshop will utilize the methods of picture interpretation and analysis from Jacobi and subsequent Jungian analysts: Rhoda Isaac, MA, Gregg Furth, PhD, and Jungian-oriented Art Therapist Joan Kellogg, MA, BC-ATR.
The workshop will be didactic and experiential and participants will learn how spontaneous drawing can be an asset in assessment, diagnosis, goal setting, evaluation, and healing of clients. In addition, participants will have an opportunity to learn how to assess and evaluate their own personal spontaneous sketches as messages from their unconscious. The significance of personal and objective images will be discussed along with the meaning of specific images in spontaneous drawings. Ultimately, we will confirm how spontaneous art, images and active imagination make communication with the unconscious accessible to consciousness.
Please bring a pencil, drawing pad (approximately 14” x 18"), and a full box of crayons or oil pastels.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- Identify different symbol systems, such as color, numbers and spacing.
- Summarize the contributions that Jacoby, Furth, Isaac and Kellogg gave to picture interpretation.
- Experience the value of spontaneous drawing, images and active imagination as tools to bring the unconscious into consciousness.
- Explain how spontaneous drawing can be an asset in assessment, diagnosis, goal setting, evaluation and healing of clients
