Transgression

Saturday, May 4, 2024
10:00 am – 3:00 pm EST
a Zoom seminar led by Julie Bondanza, PhD

“Individuation cuts one off from personal conformity, and hence, from collectivity.”
C.G. Jung. vol 18. Par. 1095

Transgression, a sin against the law, a moral code, societal standards, or personal norms, obviously cuts one off from the collective and could become an important step in one’s individuation process. Archetypally, in the West, the first sin is disobedience against God’s command not to eat of the tree of knowledge which gives one the ability to know the difference between good and evil. The result, of course is the loss of paradise and the onset of human pain as well as the beginning of consciousness.

Consequently, transgression is double sided. From ancient times, art and mythology are full of transgressive actions. In this workshop, we will explore the double-sidedness of transgression through dreams, mythology and literature and personal story.

Learning Objectives:
The program is designed so that participants will be able to:

1. Differentiate the general definition of transgression from a definition that moves toward individuation
2. Describe a situation where a transgression results in disintegration
3. Describe a situation where transgression may lead toward individuation
4. Retell a myth or fairy tale about a transgression and the archetypal consequence
