The C.G. Jung Foundation presents

Narcissism and Its Discontents

a daylong seminar led by
Maxson J. McDowell, Phd, LMSW

Saturday, October 4, 2008
10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Narcissistic injuries are everywhere. They express themselves, for example, in addictions, compulsions, controlling behavior, excessive anger and grandiosity. They may underlie depression, anxiety, insomnia, underachievement, creative blocks and relationship problems. But narcissistic injuries resist consciousness and they are often missed, even in analysis. In this workshop, we will explore the causes, symptoms and treatment of narcissistic injury. We will watch a short vignette from Seinfeld. We will read a description from literature (Mrs. Dalloway) and discuss published clinical examples.

Everyone has some degree of narcissistic injury. If we can suffer an awareness of our own injuries then we are less controlled by them. Such awareness helps us to relate better to other people, to our creative work, and to our own selves.

In this workshop we will aim for a deeper understanding of narcissistic injury and, perhaps, more awareness of narcissism in our own lives. This workshop will be fun and will be accessible to lay-people as well as professionals. Discussion will be welcome throughout.
