The Resurrection of Shadow through Dream Imagery: A View at the Border of Light and Dark

5 Thursdays, 6:00–7:30pm
Beginning October 8, 2020
Instructor: Joan Golden-Alexis, PhD

“The shadow is an archetype that is the most accessible and the easiest to experience. The shadow is a moral problem that challenges the whole ego-personality, for no one can become conscious of the shadow without considerable moral effort.”—C.G. Jung, C.W. §14 9ii

The shadow, often discernable in dreams through personifications that are of the same sex as the dreamer, displays character traits and ways of behaving that form the counter-part to the conscious personality. When resurrected, the shadow personalities are seen to embody not only repressed drives, but more importantly those values that consciousness rejects. The shadow, however, is not the mere opposite of the conscious personality, but rather represents what each conscious personality lacks. Shadow represents for each of us what we might have been, but as yet not had the chance to be. Thus, shadow throws a bright light on identity, who one is relative to what one might have become, and offers a clarifying focus on the choices we have made and how these choices may have severely limited our innate potential. Shadow, our most intimate life companion, never leaves our side and scrupulously tracks how much we exclude that which belongs to us, shedding a constant light upon the processes that cast a long shadow.

This course will be devoted to examining how our dreams naturally and organically draw attention to this subtle exclusionary process, and consequently offer the dreamer the possibility of discovering the depth of his moral integrity while tracking at a given moment what is most essential in his personality that may have been overlooked.

7.5 CE contact hours for licensed NYS Social Workers, Psychoanalysts and Creative Arts Therapists.

Learning Objectives

On completion of this class, you will be able to:

  1. To develop a sense of how dream imagery informs and broadens our understanding of shadow, and its enormous role in expanding the growth of consciousness.
  2. To acquaint ourselves with dreams as a productive force that opens us to a symbolic understanding of the transformational potential of shadow personalities and their relationship to aspects of what the ego doesn’t yet recognize.
  3. To learn to view dream language as a cinematic event that can best be understood through an affective and kinesthetic correspondence to the imagery.
  4. To formulate a tentative answer to the question: “Is psyche ever out of touch with the importance of the moral integrity as it relates to the transformation of the personality?”
  5. Using the skills learned during the first four sessions, we will wrestle with an understanding of the shadow elements in the dreams offered by the class.

Paleolithic Cave Painting and the Emergence of Consciousness in the Two Million Year Old Man

5 consecutive Tuesdays, 7:00–8:30pm
Beginning October 6, 2020
Instructor: Harmar D. Brereton, MD

We will review the background to the emergence of human consciousness and the artistic behavior of humans in Paleolithic Europe.

Definitions of consciousness, symbol and art will be established followed by a brief review of human evolution and migration out of Africa along with the conditions in Europe 40,000 years ago which fostered the remarkable variety of artistic expression. We will examine why the caves may have been painted, considering the many possibilities. We will view examples of Portable and Parietal art with an emphasis on the caves of Altamira, Les Cavernes du Volp, Lascaux and Chauvet as well as examples from many other caves.

Finally, we will look at recent discoveries which suggest remarkably modern artistic concepts and techniques. Each presentation will take about 60-75 minutes with time for discussion and questions if possible.

CE’s are not offered for this course.

Anxiety: What is it, and how do we deal with it, from a Jungian Perspective

5 consecutive Mondays, 7:00 – 8:30pm
Beginning October 5, 2020
Instructor: David Rottman, MA

“Every source of anxiety and frustration in one’s personal life, if it’s traced back far enough, will be found to derive from the Self.” (Edward F. Edinger, Ego and Self, p. 70)

The agonizing experience of anxiety, that robs so many people of the enjoyment of life, requires new ideas and perspectives that we get from depth psychology. In this course we will look at the nature of anxiety--with attention also to the nature of relief and calm--in each of three of life’s stages: Anxiety in Youth, Anxiety in Middle Age, and Anxiety in Old Age. By looking at anxiety from a Jungian perspective, we can see what the often hidden goals of anxiety are, as well as the essential life tasks associated with anxiety. We will focus on the process of “working through” to the central core of the origin and the resolution of anxiety.

Readings will include electronically distributed excerpts from Jung’s work. There is one text for the course: Ego and Archetype by Edward F. Edinger, which can be purchased from the Jung Foundation Bookstore and on Amazon.

7.5 CE contact hours for licensed NYS Social Workers, Psychoanalysts and Creative Arts Therapists.

Supplementary Texts

The Way of the Image, Yoram Kaufmann
Ego and Self, Edward F. Edinger
The Creation of Consciousness, Edward F. Edinger
The Symbolic Quest, Edward C. Whitmont

Learning Objectives

On completion of this class, you will be able to:

  1. Describe the nature and origin of anxiety from a depth psychology perspective.
  2. Discuss the post-anxiety restoration of “centered” ego functioning, from a Jungian point of view.
  3. Outline the tasks and requirements for processing anxiety creatively, in three stages of adult life span development.
  4. Summarize the role of anxiety in the development of personal and social identity.

Jungian Psychoanalytic Theory: Personal and Clinical Application

ADVANCED SEMINARS-Online
Seminar 1: Fall 2020

12 Tuesdays: 7:00 - 8:30 pm
September 8th – November 24th
Instructor:Jane Selinske, EdD, LCSW, LP, NCPsyA

Analysis should release an experience that grips us or falls upon us from above, an experience that has substance and body such as those things which occurred to the ancients. If I were going to symbolize I would choose the Annunciation.—C.G. Jung

Jung’s psychological theories were developed from his personal and professional experiences and observations. In Memories, Dreams, Reflections Jung told about his history, development, dreams, thoughts, and how he arrived at the conception of Analytic Psychology. The later release of The Red Book presented additional insights around his descent into an intense confrontation with his unconscious which led to the central concept of his psychology: the process of individuation.

Jung’s Psychoanalytic Theory succeeds within a psychological Temenos, or sacred containment, with “God’s consent.” In the Temenos the existence, potentiality, closeness and manifestation of the God-Image can be experienced. Knowing this, the challenge is for the analyst/psychotherapist to learn all the theory possible as Jung stated, but then to forget it all and come to each individual encounter with an openness where the psyches of both can meet and intermingle. Jung recommended modifying one’s pre-existing theory for each patient.

In order to follow Jung’s recommendation to modify one’s pre-existing theory when working with a patient, the analyst/psychotherapist must first be familiar with Jungian concepts. We will begin by discussing Jung’s history, his Model of the Psyche and his Theory of Wholeness and Individuation.

This will be followed by Dream Interpretation, Typology, Transcendent Function, Alchemy, Active Imagination, Synchronicity, Symbols and Complex Theory.

Through lecture, discussion, preassigned YouTube Videos, readings and Personal and Clinical Application, the participants will have a greater knowledge and understanding of Jungian concepts. This didactic and experiential class will assist the practitioner in their clinical work and personal journey.

Reading Memories, Dreams, Reflections prior to class is highly recommended.

Spring 2021 Contact hours: 18 CE contact hours for licensed NYS Social Workers, Psychoanalysts and Creative Arts Therapists for each seminar. For licensed NYS Social Workers, Psychoanalysts and Creative Arts Therapists applying for CE credit, students must attend all 12 sessions.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss the history and influences of C.G. Jung’s religious family background that contributed to his search for a religious function in the psyche.
  2. Recognize how the origin of Jungian Psychology was influenced by Jung’s exposure to Spiritualism, and his descent into the unconscious.
  3. Describe the differences between Jung and Freud regarding their separation and role of symbols in the psyche.
  4. Describe the components of Jung’s Map of the Psyche.
  5. Explain the significance of providing a Temenos during analytic sessions.
  6. Apply Jung’s Theory of Typology both personally and with clients.
  7. Discuss Jung’s Theory of Active Imagination and have students personally engage the technique in class and with clients.
  8. Discuss the significance of Symbols within Jungian Psychoanalytic Theory and their connection to the Transcendent Function.
  9. Explain the Dramatic Structure of a dream methodology for analyzing a dream and have participants apply this technique to personal and clinical dreams.
  10. Discuss the significance of Alchemy for Jung.
  11. Discuss the origin of Jung’s Complex Theory and meaning of Synchronicity.
  12. Describe what it means to live a symbolic life and give a case example.

The Caretaker Complex

5 consecutive Tuesdays, 6:00 – 7:30 pm
Beginning July 7
Instructor: Irina Doctoroff, LMFT, LP

7.5 CE contact hours for licensed NYS Social Workers, Psychoanalysts and Creative Arts Therapists.

The Caretaker Complex is one of identity which is formed early in childhood when a parent sees her child as an object she owns for her own needs and forces the child to fit into the mold of her expectations.  Primarily the mother expects the child to take care of her.  As adults, such children continues to serve, take care of, and accommodate other people, often at their own expense.  We often meet caretaker-identified people in healing and teaching professions.  What brings them to therapy is their inability to have full access to their creativity, and to experience true happiness and pleasure.

In this course, we will explore the formation, development, and treatment of the “caretaker personality.”  The nature of caretakers’ original wound suggests that a crucial task for them is to allow themselves to be taken care of and be able to own and express their needs and wants.  We will also discuss the caretaker personality from a historical and cultural perspective and relate it to the state of the Feminine in our patriarchal society.

Learning Objectives:

On completion of this class, you will be able to:

  1. Define the Caretaker complex in terms of its nature and structure.
  2. Discuss mechanisms through which the Caretaker complex is formed from a Jungian and psychoanalytic perspective.
  3. Engage in several practices for the transformation of the negative aspects of the Caretaker complex through creative drawing and active imagination.
  4. Demonstrate how the formation of the Caretaker complex is connected to broader social and cultural structures and how it challenges traditional ideas of masculinity and femininity.
  5. Utilize myths and fairy tales to further analyze the Caretaker complex.
  6. Apply theoretical knowledge to clinical cases.

Jungian Dream Interpretation Online

Instructor: Maxson J. McDowell, PhD, LMSW, LP

7.5 CE contact hours for licensed NYS Social Workers, Psychoanalysts and Creative Arts Therapists.

We don’t know where dreams come from but, from experience, we know their purpose. They show us the next possible step in our developing consciousness. They warn us if we are going astray, encourage us if we need it and offer penetrating insights into our confusion. To interpret dreams we have to be disciplined and logical but also emotional, feeling, imaginative and sensate. Using Jung’s concepts as our guide, we will combine our insights to explore each dream and feel success when the class as a whole recognizes an answer and experiences a deepening of consciousness. We will not work with class members’ dreams. Please bring a dream, with permission, from a family member or friend.

Please look at the suggested readings at this address in advanced
of the start of this class:
https://jungny.com/jungian-dream-interpretation-readings/

Learning Objectives:

On completion of this class, you will be able to:

  1. Distinguish between associations, explanations, and amplifications to a dream image.
  2. Distinguish between Freud's and Jung's use of associations to dream images.
  3. Identify which part of a dream gives the current psychological situation.
  4. Recognize the dream's setting and its importance.
  5. Practice using both logic and imagination in dream analysis.
  6. Identify some physiological reactions of the dreamer which demonstrate a useful interpretation.
  7. Describe the relationship between a dream and the dreamer's psychological progress.
  8. Recognize when a dream may (or may not) be helpful in clinical work.
  9. Recognize what Jung meant by a "true symbol."

Holy Longing: Spirituality and the Religious Attitude in the Psychology of C.G. Jung

5 consecutive Mondays, 5:15-6:45 pm
Beginning June 29
Instructor: Royce Froehlich, PhD, MDiv, LCSW-R

The course title takes its name from a poem by JW Goethe, who provided C.G. Jung with great inspiration in the pursuit of expressions of the psyche’s inclination toward wholeness in its variety of forms (archetypal patterns), with special attention to manifestations of the coming together of opposites, the unio mystica in religious traditions. This led Jung to be able to address, in his unique way, what was being described already in his time as a spiritual malaise in the modern world, which he addressed through personal reflection and a lifetime's dedication to the study of the long history of what R. Otto called “The Idea of the Holy.”

This course will delve into some of Jung’s writing on matters of religion, soul, and spirit that are meant to inform and inspire us to lead more of a psychologically balanced, individuated life. Classes will follow the trajectory of Jung’s development of his theory of wholeness. Informed by readings from the Collected Works and other writers on religions East & West, we will see how his own spiritual crisis, described in The Red Book and Memories Dreams, Reflections, affected his interest in what he called certain rare states of consciousness. A multimedia (PowerPoint) format of images and recordings provide a dynamic and engaging framework for the instructor’s online presentation.

Learning Objectives:

On completion of this class, you will be able to:

  1. Assess Jung’s contribution to the understanding of the human psyche and its value for clinical treatment.
  2. Discuss some key concepts in Jung’s Analytical Psychology within a religious context.
  3. Describe and discuss with greater understanding of the term depth psychology.
  4. Describe the connecting links between Jung’s analytic paradigm and its application to the field of Ethics.

Oedipus Redux

5 consecutive Thursdays, 7:00 – 8:30 pm
Beginning July 23
Instructor: William Baker, PsyD

7.5 CE contact hours for licensed NYS Social Workers, Psychoanalysts and Creative Arts Therapists.

[Freud’s] is the honor of having discovered the first archetype, the Oedipus complex. That is a mythological and a psychological motif simultaneously (C.G. Jung Letters p. 525, 1949).

The Oedipus is essentially a tragic analysis.  Everything is already there, so it needs only to be extricated….  How favorable that is for the poet! But I fear the Oedipus is one of a kind without any secondary species (Schiller to Goethe, 1797).

Who was Oedipus and what’s the big deal with his complex? What do the terms “Oedipal” and “pre-Oedipal” mean, and how can they inform our psychological understanding? Beginning with a reading of Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, this course will provide a detailed exploration of the mythology and psychology of Oedipus.  From Jung and Freud to Lacan and Hillman, we will compare and contrast analytic theories while creating a composite portrait of modernity’s most central mythological and psychological figure.

Learning Objectives:

On completion of this class, you will be able to:

  1. Summarize the original myth of Oedipus.
  2. Describe a Jungian understanding of this primary mythologem and archetypal motif.
  3. Compare various psychoanalytic theories of Oedipal dynamics from Jung, Freud, Klein, Loewald and French psychoanalysis.
  4. Describe critiques of psychoanalytic notions of Oedipus from Hillman, Kohut, Benjamin and others.
