Work with the Red Thread/Bow To The Orient

a daylong seminar led by
David Rottman, M.A.

10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

C. G. Jung  famously said that, “When one man has an image, another man may die [as a result].”

A central idea from Jung’s work, as crystallized by Dr. Yoram Kaufmann in The Way of the Image, is that images are the primary, powerful, and elemental stuff of human life: the image is the carrier, and the generator, par excellence of psychic energy — for emotional health or illness, for good or for evil.

In this workshop, we will explore how the psychic energy in images can be released to improve our experience of work and relationships, and our experience of ourselves. By following the Red Thread* of the “orient” or “guidelines” of an image, and bowing to the results we find, we can make exciting use of the basic operating system of the psyche and of objective reality.

Among the many images we will discuss as examples are: the rose, the helicopter, the train, the cognitive-behavioral model of the mind, the Army, and the image of Perfection. We will work together on the “orient” of these images and others.

*The Red Thread is the single thread that allows tailors to disassemble garments for alterations or repair. Its singularity can also be compared to the red light of the laser that can be focused on a surgical area with minimal disruption to surrounding tissue.
