Anaclitic Depression and the Archetype of the Feminine

Saturday, December 3, 2022
10:00am – 3:00pm est

a daylong Zoom seminar led by
Janis M. Maxwell, PhD

Contact hours:  4 CE contact hours for Licensed NYS Social Workers, Psychoanalysts and Creative Arts Therapists for this program.

Major depression is the Number 1 psychological disorder in the western world.  It is growing in all age groups, in virtually every community, and the growth is seen mostly in the young, especially teens, and the elderly.  At the current rate of increase, it will be the most disabling condition in the world, not only in these age groups but in all ages.   Anaclitic depression is a term taken from developmental psychologists who describe what happens when a young child is emotionally separated from a mother or mother figure.

In this seminar, we will explore the possible meaning of this type of depression from a Jungian perspective.  What happens when an individual, a family, or society at large is deprived of a meaningful and emotional connection to the Feminine, specifically the archetypal Feminine as reflected in the Mother?   We will discuss the implications of being deprived of this archetypal field called “Mother” and explore ways to address it.

Learning Objectives:
The participants will be able to:

  1. Describe alternate views of depression and its source;
  2. Summarize the connection between the feminine aspect of the Self and depression;
  3. Explain the various ways of addressing depression;
  4. Describe the importance of emotional connection to a mother symbol.

Janis M. Maxwell, PhD, is a member of the faculty as a supervising analyst and is a member of the Curatorium of the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich.  She has held the positions of Director of Training for the Philadelphia Jung Institute and the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts.  She teaches internationally and has a practice in Maryland, USA.

The Absent Father Effect on Daughters: Father Desire, Father Wounds

Saturday, November 12, 2022
10:00am – 3:00pm est

a daylong Zoom seminar led by
Susan Schwartz, PhD

Contact hours:  4 CE contact hours for Licensed NYS Social Workers, Psychoanalysts and Creative Arts Therapists for this program.

The absent father effect is a love story, but an unrequited one. Harm is done due to the presence of absence, affecting a daughter—and the father--in body, mind, and soul. The father is an essential aspect of the psyche and significant for the daughter’s psychological and physical life as it is expressed personally and culturally. This also includes males who have absent father issues as well.

Aspects of the psyche, according to Jungian psychology, affected by the absent father include the negative father complex, puella archetype and updating the concept of the animus. The identification with or denial of the absent father effect has serious ramifications for development. The presentation focuses on the bleaker side of daughters and fathers’ relationships, taking seriously the ramifications from the lack as well as discovering the repair and hope.

Learning Objectives:
The participants will be able to:
1. Describe how the daughter carries the shadow of the father
2. Explain why the father is so absent in psychological theory
3. Describe how therapists work with the father projection in the transference and countertransference
4. Describe how the father absence can become filled

Susan E. Schwartz, PhD, trained in Zurich, Switzerland, as a Jungian analyst is also a clinical psychologist and member of the International Association of Analytical Psychology. She presents to numerous Jungian conferences and teaching programs in the USA and worldwide. She has articles in several journals and chapters in books on Jungian analytical psychology. Her current book is translated into several languages and was published by Routledge in 2020. It is entitled The Absent Father Effect on Daughters, Father Desire, Father Wounds. Another book will be published by Routledge in 2023 entitled The Fragility of Self in the ‘As-If’ Personality: Imposter Syndrome and Illusions in the Mirror. Her Jungian analytical practice is in Paradise Valley, Arizona, USA, and her website is www.susanschwartzphd.com

Jane Selinske, Heide Kolb and Cynthia Poorbaugh

Opening remarks by Jane Selinske,
President, C.G. Jung Foundation

Moderated by Christina McDonald

Experimental film,  4 minutes, by Zillah Bowes, 2022 Stellar Award

Weeds aren't just weeds. They're like friends. During the first Covid-19 wave, plants and flowers are allowed to grow wild. Using 3D animated photos, the film lyrically re-examines our relationship with urban plant life in the urgent context of biodiversity loss and climate crisis.

Documentary film, 10 minutes, by Rafael Salazar and Ava Wiland 2022 Jury’s Citation Award

Sculptor, performer, and sound healer Guadalupe Maravilla combines his personal experiences as a formerly undocumented immigrant and cancer survivor with indigenous knowledge to create new rituals for healing. An impressionistic and kaleidoscopic look at Maravilla’s multifaceted practice and biography, the film follows the celebrated Salvadoran born artist as he creates epic cast metal towers at Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City and conducts healing “sound baths” for his community. The film was produced by the long-running, Peabody Award-winning documentary non-profit Art21.

*The Brooklyn Museum is presenting a special exhibition, Guadalupe Maravilla: Tierra Blanca Joven, now through September 18th. See the Museum’s website for details.

Animation, 2 minutes, by Stacey Davis and Ali Clark, 2022 Director’s Choice Award

Told from alternating points of view, “A Hand to Hold” explores the connective thread of handholding between parent and child. When mother and child release hands – and enjoy the freedom that comes from letting go – they do so knowing that they will always be joined.

Taveras course title— Part 1

5 consecutive Wednesdays, 6:00 – 7:30 pm. Eastern Time, USA via Zoom
Beginning March 2, 2022

Instructor: Maria Taveras, LCSW

7.5 CE contact hours for licensed NYS Social Workers, Psychoanalysts and Creative Arts Therapists.

“Individuals must become both more united and increasingly different.”– Felix Guattari

“Resistance to the organized mass can be effected only by the man who is as well organized in his individuality as the mass itself.”– Carl Jung

TEXT TO COME---In this course participants will be introduced to the ethico-aesthetic paradigm called Ecosophy, developed by French psychoanalyst Felix Guattari (1930-1992). Specific attention will be given to his text The Three Ecologies and its critique of capitalism’s effects on our personal and collective mental ecology (subjectivity), social ecology, and environmental ecology. We will connect The Three Ecologies and the psychological tools it provides directly to psychological wellness and clinical practice.

After unpacking and applying the Three Ecologies we will bring in Jung to help us answer the question, did Guattari overlook a fourth ecology? The ecology of spirit. Or might the ecology of spirit already permeate the three ecologies identified by Guattari?

Get ready for a ride into the funhouse of radical psychoanalytic and spiritual critique of capitalism and its intent to form and subjugate your individual and our collective mental, social, and environmental ecologies to its needs and desires. Leave the course with tools for individuating in our time of what Guattari called Integrated World Capitalism (IWC). Leave with new tools for tough times.

Learning Objectives
TEXT TO COME---On completion of this class, you will be able to:

  1. Recall and explain Ecosophy
  2. Demonstrate a pragmatic understanding of Mental Ecology (subjectivity)
  3. Demonstrate a pragmatic understanding of Social Ecology
  4. Demonstrate a pragmatic understanding of Environmental Ecology
  5. Summarize the interdependence of The Three Ecologies
  6. Apply Ecosophy to personal development
  7. Apply Ecosophy to clinical practice
  8. Utilize new psychological tools for our tough times

Jungian Dream Interpretation

CLOSED

5 consecutive Fridays
6:00-7:30 pm Eastern Time, USA
Beginning October 8, 2021

Instructor: Maxson J. McDowell, PhD, LMSW, LP

7.5 CE contact hours for licensed NYS Social Workers, Psychoanalysts and Creative Arts Therapists.

We don’t know where dreams come from but, from experience, we know their purpose. They show us the next possible step in our developing consciousness. They warn us if we are going astray, encourage us if we need it and offer penetrating insights into our confusion. To interpret dreams we have to be disciplined and logical but also emotional, feeling, imaginative and sensate. Using Jung’s concepts as our guide, we will combine our insights to explore each dream and feel success when the class as a whole recognizes an answer and experiences a deepening of consciousness. We will not work with class members’ dreams. Please bring a dream, with permission, from a family member or friend.

Please look at the suggested readings at this address in advance of the start of this class: www.jungny.com/jungian-dream-interpretation-readings

Learning Objectives
On completion of this class, you will be able to:

  1. Distinguish between associations, explanations, and amplifications to a dream image.
  2. Distinguish between Freud's and Jung's use of associations to dream images.
  3. Identify which part of a dream gives the current psychological situation.
  4. Recognize the dream's setting and its importance.
  5. Practice using both logic and imagination in dream analysis.
  6. Identify some physiological reactions of the dreamer which demonstrate a useful interpretation.
  7. Describe the relationship between a dream and the dreamer's psychological progress.
  8. Recognize when a dream may (or may not) be helpful in clinical work.
  9. Recognize what Jung meant by a "true symbol."

Master-NEW POSTS

 Saturday, October 30, 2021
10:00am– 3:00pm Eastern Time, USA
Beginning October 6, 2021

A Daylong Zoom Seminar Led by : Christina Becker, MBA, RP

Contact hours: 4 CE contact hours for Licensed NYS Social Workers, Psychoanalysts and Creative Arts Therapists for this program.

Astrologically, the COVID-19 worldwide pandemic has been correlated with the 22-year cycle of Saturn/Pluto. This cycle brings with it forced collective transformation and significant change.  The chaos we are experiencing in the world - climate change increased natural disasters, and the pandemic  - suggests that our world may be in a much larger process of transformation, activating the archetype of death and rebirth that is encoded in the collective unconscious.  What is this transformation about?

In this workshop we will explore the self-imposed isolation and lock-down that has been necessary for a collective psychological reset.  We will also explore the images associated with this and the personal experiences that have arisen.  Stepping back, we might look to a larger perspective that lies in the astrological precision of the equinoxes.  We are at the end of the Age of Pisces and moving into the Age of Aquarius.  An exploration of the Age of Aquarius might offer a glimpse of what is to come and how we might activate this transformation in our own lives.  No astrological knowledge is necessary.

Our main focus will be to look at the archetypal energies associated with the outer astrological planets and show how the correlation of these cycles to significant shifts in the collective consciousness. The emphasis of the workshop will also be on grounding these ideas in the lived experience of workshop participants with the aim of finding our individual role in the collective movement and finding meaning in our own lives.

Learning Objectives:

  1.  To explain the grand patterns of human evolution that has been seen in the large collective cycle.
  2.  To discuss the archetypal themes embedded in the COVID-19 pandemic both in the imagery and in the astrology of its spread.
  3.  To explore what might lie ahead in terms of the evolution of human consciousness that speaks to the age of Aquarius.
  4.  Apply the concepts presented to explore personal shifts in thinking and values as a result of the pandemic.

Christina Becker, MBA, RP, is a Zurich trained Jungian analyst with a private practice in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.  She is the author of The Heart of the Matter: Individuation as an Ethical Process and a number of articles in the area of astrology and psychology.  She is a professional member of the Inter-regional Society of Jungian Analysts and Association of Graduate Analytical Psychologists, a clinical member of the Ontario Society of Psychotherapists. In addition to her Jungian training, she studied astrology at the Faculty of Astrological Studies in London, England, and with Liz Greene through the Astrodeinst seminars in Zurich.

and Drawings on Astrology Explored!

Speaker: Anne C. Ortelee, ISAR-CAP, PMAFA, NCGR-PAA 3, OPA

We are born at a given moment in a given place, and like vintage years of wine, we have the qualities of the year and of the season in which we are born. Astrology does not lay claim to anything more.—C.G. Jung

Our evening will be spent exploring Jung's Writings and Drawings on Astrology and connecting with like minded people. You will see his astrological Images in his Black Books that evolved into the magnificent Red Book. There will be wine and light appetizers!
